Purity

Pure gold isn't used to make jewelry because, in its raw form, the metal is too soft. In jewelry making, special alloying additions or a ligature (mostly copper) are used, and adding them produces a material suitable for crafting jewelry.

To determine the share of gold in a piece, a purity mark is set – a number indicating the proportion of the base metal as a percentage. For example, the most common 585 purity means the share of gold in the alloy is 58.5%. This is the optimal balance, providing both visual appeal and strength and durability. This matters a great deal for gold rings – women's hands don't just look beautiful under the spotlight, they also do a great deal of work, so the jewelry needs to be able to hold up.

In 750 purity, there's noticeably more gold – 75%. But this alloy is less durable due to its softness. Such women's gold rings are lovely only for special occasions – formal events, nights out, celebrations. They aren't suited for everyday wear.

Color

The ligature not only gives gold alloys greater strength but also allows the color to be adjusted. Modern gold rings can be made in red and lemon tones, or in white. Other variations are possible too, but it's red, yellow, and white gold where you'll most often find women's gold rings to buy.

Size

In Ukraine, as in the rest of Eastern Europe and in Germany, ring size equals the diameter of its inner circle, measured in millimeters. Children's rings are usually made in sizes 11-14, with adult sizes starting after that.

For wedding bands, something more practical is usually chosen – a fully smooth surface or a subtle texture, neat miniature inserts, or engraving. It's also increasingly common for women to have two wedding bands: a formal one – more striking and expensive, and an everyday one – comfortable, without extra detail.

It's considered good etiquette to buy a woman a gold ring for her 18th birthday or graduation – a young woman's first "grown-up" ring, marking her entry into a new stage of life. And there are calendar holidays when women are more likely to receive jewelry as a gift, gold rings in particular. These are traditionally March 8th, Valentine's Day (February 14th), and New Year's.
